Atelier Bow-wow

To Begin With - An Infinite Loop

Based on the unique structural character of Cumberland St Pier, an infinite loop idea is introduced to transform the former abandoned pier into an actively programmed urban park and to create an visual and physical connection with the urban context.

preliminary thinking

I start with the thinking of Central Delaware River as Philadelphia's edge and also the gate towards NJ.

BIG: st. petersburg pier

Initial Thinking

I think there are two problems we need to face: first is I-95 and the other is the piers' relationship to the city. So I began to go around Philly to catch some feelings.

And I take some photos.

Movie is another inspiration. Rocky is the hero of the city. He runs through Philadelphia and view all the important site..

Here's the video of his route. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iPFK5T_G3U

3 More Projects

MVVA has done some great pier projects.

One precedent

Urban Beach of netherlands. One interesting form of the pier design.

Three Regeneration Precedents

Here is three regeneration pier projects.

Canary Wharf, London

Pier Head, Liverpool

New York Precendents

New York has done significant redevelopment along its waterfront.

Check out Hudson River Park:

Brooklyn Bridge Park:

East River Eco Pier:

Chelsea Piers: (not great design, but good program ideas)

http://www.chelseapiers.com/company/history/

Pier 40 (LGBT Youth Center, another interesting program idea):

http://www.fiercenyc.org/media/docs/2889_Pier40Proposal.pdf

Pier 57 (design is not that good, but it reuses shipping containers, which is interesting):

http://www.bustler.net/index.php/article/lot-ek_selected_to_design_new_york_citys_pier_57/

Not related to piers, but lots of cool info about New York, sustainability, etc is the Fresh Kills Blog:

http://freshkillspark.wordpress.com/

and completely unrelated to New York, is this craziness in Miami:

San Francisco Precedents

The Exploratorium, an interactive science museum in San Francisco, is moving to two piers along the bay.  The redesign is fairly tame, but the museum's exhibits along the waterfront are pretty exciting.

Hyphae Design Laboratory has a really intriguing concept for a redesign of a pier/garage that combines spaces for commercial ships, hot tubs, ecological plantings and sea lions.  Kind of awesome.

initial research

I've started to identify piers I'm interested in working with. They are all identified as "park" or "open space" on the master plan and seem like there are a variety of different conditions to work with!

another precedent

also another one to watch is Chicago's Navy Pier Competition (http://www.navypiervision.com). the shortlist is down to 5 teams, and they are whittling them down as we speak!

3 precedents to share!
